BALKAN MUSIC COURSE

Sunday 16th October 2011

Intermediate and Advanced

adult instrumentalists

All Instruments Welcome

This one day course is a unique opportunity for amateur and professional musicians to play traditional music from the Balkan region with leading professional performers and educators. It takes place at Jamboree (address below).

The course runs from 1pm with ensembles and classes followed by a student/teacher concert in the evening at 8.30pm to be followed by a set by the Balkanatics!

Please email Ian to be put on mailing list.

Activities will include an introduction/rhythm session, listening session, various mixed ensembles, a ‘big band’ and sectionals and will end with a concert performance for your friends and family (free entry).

The music of the Balkan region is diverse but shares a common influence from the Turkish Ottoman empire (which lasted for 500 years in the region). Scales are influenced by the middle east and rhythms are often but not always in odd meters (7/8,9/8,11/8 etc).

Some music reading ability is desirable (though not essential for rhythm section players). If you haven’t tried playing in odd meters before – don’t worry, we will show you techniques for internalising and practising these rhythms. Besides, much of the day’s music making will be using familiar rhythms such as 4/4.

As well as playing arrangements and studying scales and rhythms, the opportunity to improvise will also be given to students, though not forced onto anyone who is uncomfortable to do so.

Teachers will be...

IAN EAST - woodwind

PETRO DEWSHI - accordion/keys

JOE TOWNSEND - strings

RASTKO RASIC - percussion
