THE RED DAVULS
'The
Red Davuls' are a pan-Balkan Davul-Zurna group based in SE England.
The Davul Zurna groups of the Balkans and Anatolia perform ancient folk rituals and celebrations for varied communities.
We perform various traditional styles from this region.
The Davul-Zurna sound is heard across the Balkans and Anatolia creating, for the locals a link between modern life and ancient customs. The dance rhythms and beatiful melodies create strange overtones that ring 'inside' the listeners heads and are spiritually uplifting and addictive, creating in participants a state of 'Kefi' or 'sevdah'. This is the original party music!
Davul is also known as the tapan/dauli (folk 'bass' drum played with stick and wand on either side)
Zurna is also known as zourna/sourna/surla/zurla (keyless/open holed folk oboe/shawm) - we play the large 'kaba' zurna

The Red Davuls are available to play all kinds of engagements and can work in many sizes (two musicians upwards) to fit your location and budget
We can perform 'static' or march/wander. The Davul players also perform traditional dances with their drums if you'd like!
